IPL Hair Removal Treatment FAQ
What is IPL Hair Reduction?
Intense Pulsed Light Treatment (IPL) is the permanent reduction of hair through a process that is comfortable, non –invasive, time saving, effective and most of all safe.
A laser emits a light at a specific wavelength. It is different to normal light. It travels in a synchronised fashion, is monochromatic and can be pulsed. The principle of lasers is based on light absorption.
How does it work?
Permanent Hair reduction is achieved by the use of light energy from a laser. When the light comes in contact with the skin, is it absorbed by the pigment (melanin) which is mainly concentrated in the base of the hair follicle. The light energy is then transformed to a thermal heat and the hair follicle is heated to a critical temperature at which point it is destroyed. Hair follicles with high melanin content absorb more energy, and are thus more easily destroyed. That is why this procedure is more effective on dark, coarse hair.
When light is absorbed by the hair follicle, it disables the hair in the growing stage of hair growth (called Anagen). The growing hair will then grow up and fall out. Hairs in the second and third stage of hair growth will come back softer and finer than before. Subsequent treatments will treat the hairs previously in the second and third stage of hair growth, which is why a series of treatments is required.
Is the treatment safe?
Yes! IPL is extremely safe in the hands of an experienced and qualified therapist. The IPL system is able to deliver light energy to the skin in a gentle way and our state of the art medical grade equipment have built in cooling components for a much safer, painless treatment!
What do treatments feel like?
The majority of clients feel treatment is less painful than waxing or electrolysis. There is a slight warming sensation followed by what clients describe as a flick of a rubber band on the skin. Overall, treatment is comfortable and quick. Each pulse of the light is able to treat around 100 hairs per session, so it means the treatment is over before you know it!
How many treatments will I need?
The length of treatment varies from one client to another. One person’s hair growth is completely different to the next. That is why we always give an estimation of the amount of treatments you may need. Generally this may be anywhere from 8-12 sessions to achieve a complete permanent reduction. After 4-6 treatments you will see
the hairs become lighter and finer, growth also slows down significantly. However, it is recommended for long term results that you remain consistent with treatment and follow the full course that is recommended. Otherfactors that can influence the course of treatment include colour and strength of hair growth, skin colour or sensitivity
